The last few days have been very windy with whitecaps. I keep mentioning that the kiteboarders and sailboarders are in heaven. It occurred to me I haven’t shown any pictures of kiteboarders, so today I grabbed this picture from right in front of the condo.
I don’t kiteboard, but am fascinated by the kites they use. In the ’80s when I was flying kites at Westport, Washington, I used to fly a much smaller version of this aerobatic kite, called a Flexifoil. These kites were VERY fast, and we even clocked one at over 100mph with a radar gun. There were two sizes — 6 foot wide and 3 foot wide. For even more thrill, we would stack these kites one on top of another. I think the most I ever saw stacked were six 6-footers, flown by a guy with custom roller skates for the beach. He would skate up and down the beach just like those kiteboarders on the ocean right in front of our condo.
I miss the gang from the old kite flying days in Westport. They were great people, including Darrell and Connie Wiltman, Al and Creda Axton, Jerry & Richard Soulier. We had loads of fun flying those kites, small and large. If any of you should happen on this blog, drop me a line!
While there are many brands of these kites, I see from a web search that Flexifoil does make kites for kiteboarding. It is kind of fun knowing I was one of the pioneers using these kites.
